Housing And Support

Valuing People Now a new three-year strategy for people with learning disabilities sets out the cross government strategy for the
next three years The vision remains as set out in Valuing people 2001: that all people with a learning disability are people first with the right to lead their lives like any others, with same opportunities and responsibilities, and to be treated with the same dignity and respect.

  • There are about 34,000 people with a learning disability in Kent 26,000 of these people are adults
  • Where do people with a learning disability known to Kent Adult Social Services live at the
    moment?
  • 800 people in homes paid for by the National Health Service
  • 1,200 people in supported housing places
  • 1,400 people supported by Kent in residential homes
  • 1,500 people in residential homes that have come from outside of Kent.

The focus of the strategy is to make that vision a reality….. Making it happen

The Kent Housing Action Plan – for people with a learning disability has been produced in order to help the people of Kent who work in housing, in Adult Social Services and the District Partnership Groups to improve the housing options for people with a learning disability

The Kent Partnership Board and the Kent Joint Policy and Planning Board (Housing) have agreed four aims that need to happen in
each of the districts in Kent.

Housing Action PlanFIRST AIM - meetings with all the right people to make sure housing in the district is happening – A template has been set out to help you decide who should attend these meetings, suggested agenda items, how often they should happen and who should be told of the outcome

SECOND AIM – a housing needs survey happens and the housing needs of people with a learning disability are recorded in each Local Authority's Housing Strategy Plan – Two templates have been designed that you could use. One for a housing needs survey and the second a tool for people to start to think about their housing needs

THIRD AIM - Information that is given to people with a learning disability about housing is easy to read - A list of organisations that can produce Easy To Read information and a template for Kent Home Choice that can be used in your district and a template of a tenancy agreement

FOURTH AIM - Everyone involved in Housing will have training – This section suggests a way forward if you are organising training.
