Workforce Development

The Skillnet Group is committed to providing excellent support to the workforce. We believe it is important for people to have the right support to do their job well.

The people who work for the Skillnet Group are supported in a number of ways:

Training and Qualifications

All of our internal training is provided jointly by people with and without learning difficulties. We run regular workshops and training sessions for everyone. We have at least 6 Training Days a year for everyone.

We have developed our own qualification which is accredited through the Open College Network. This is called the Level 2 and Level 3 Award in Supporting People with a Learning Disability (Induction).

This is available to everyone in the workforce and means that the courses we offer will lead to a qualification.

The award in Supporting People with a Learning Disability meets the Common Induction Standards recommended by Skills for Care and the Valuing People Support Team.

The qualification has four units:

  • Health and Safety in a Learning Disability Setting
  • Principles of Learning Disability Support
  • Protecting People who have Learning Disabilities from Abuse
  • Your role as Learning Disability Worker

We have developed courses and workshops, based on people’s experiences, to cover these main areas. All of our courses are developed by people with a learning difficulty and people without.

Supervision

Everyone has regular supervision (meetings to talk about how their work is going). These meetings give people the chance to think about what they are good at, how they want to develop and what training they need.

Appraisal

People have an appraisal after they have been in their job for four months. The first part of the appraisal is carried out by people with a learning difficulty. Then other colleagues and the person’s line manager feeds back to the person. Everyone has an appraisal once per year after their four month appraisal.

People with a learning difficulty were involved in designing the appraisal form and questions.
Our appraisal process is constantly evolving and being changed to make sure that it stays relevant.

Everyone works together equally to take part in appraisals. This involves people with and without a learning difficulty. Our appraisal process is constantly evolving and being changed to make sure that it stays relevant.
